Storm Evert brought unusually strong winds for the time of year to southern and south-west England. On 27th October, two rain-gauges in the Lake District recorded daily totals of over 200mm . Heavy and persistent rainĪ slow-moving frontal system brought heavy and persistent rain to parts of northern England and southern Scotland. This was one of the most powerful and damaging winters storms of the latest decade. Storm Arwen brought severe winds across the UK overnight, with the Met Office issuing a red warning for wind. Storm Barra brought strong winds and heavy rain to the UK, but the storm was more extreme across Ireland with the Irish national meteorological service, Met Eireann, issuing a red warning for wind. There was a spell of exceptionally mild weather over the New Year, with the UK recording both its warmest New Year's Eve and New Year's Day on record. Northern Scotland and north-east England were worst affected. Storms Malik and Corrie arrived in quick succession and brought damaging north-westerly winds. Two rare red warnings for wind were issued for storm Eunice, the most severe and damaging storm to affect England and Wales since February 2014. Three named storms affected the UK in the space of a week. A red warning for extreme heat was issued and temperatures exceeded 40 ☌ for the first time, setting a new UK record. The UK experienced a brief but unprecedented heatwave in mid-July. The UK experienced one of the most significant spells of low winter temperatures since the exceptional December of 2010. The storm was named by the Danish Meteorological Institute. Storm Otto brought strong winds to northern and eastern Scotland and north-east England. Storm Noa was one of the ten most powerful April storms to affect England and Wales in the last 50 years. Storm Antoni brought strong winds and heavy rain to parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The storm brought some particularly wet weather to Northern Ireland. Storm Betty brought strong winds and heavy rain to western parts of the UK overnight 18 to 19 September. In early September the UK experienced a significant heatwave with daily maximum temperatures exceeding 30☌ somewhere in the UK for seven consecutive days. Capel Curig (Conwy) recorded a gust of 73Kt (84mph), the equal-highest September gust on record for Wales. Storm Agnes brought some wet and windy weather, but fortunately the storm had weakened by the time it reached the UK. This was the wettest 2-day period on record for Scotland. Much of Scotland experienced prolonged and heavy rainfall with 100 to 150mm falling across the Central and Southern Highlands. The Met Office issued two red warnings for rain. Storm Babet brought exceptional rainfall and strong winds to parts of eastern Scotland and prolonged widespread heavy rain across much of the UK. Storm Ciarán was an exceptionally severe storm for the time of year, bringing damaging winds across northern France and the Channel Islands which bore the brunt on the southern flank of the storm . Storm Debi, named by the Irish National Met Service, Met Éireann, brought strong winds and heavy rain to the UK with parts of Northern Ireland, south-west Scotland, north-west England and North Wales worst affected. Storms Elin and Fergus, arriving in rapid succession, brought heavy rain and strong winds to the UK with flooding a particular concern. Tropical storms in other basins such as the eastern and western Pacific Ocean are also given names. That name was permanently retired from use. That hurricane was so deadly and damaging that the World Meteorological Organization decided that reuse of its name would be insensitive. However, if you compare the names in the lists, you will see that Dorian will not be reused in 2025. This shows how the name lists are recycled every six years.
